What do I do if my email is hacked?

What do I do if my email is hacked?

Here are some immediate actions you should take:

Reset your UTORiD password. This password is used for every University service, including your email, OneDrive, WiFi password to join the UofT network, Quercus, ROSI, etc.

To reset your UTORiD password:

  1. Visit https://recover.utorid.utoronto.ca/default.aspx

  2. Enter your UTORiD in the blank space

  3. Follow the on-screen steps to reset your password

Next steps:

  1. Change all passwords that are similar or derivative of the password that was compromised. Sometimes compromised accounts information are added to a darkweb database used by hackers to gain access to different web accounts. To be safe, you should change all passwords that are similar.

  2. Run a virus/malware scan on all your devices. A good trial software you can use is Sophos or Malwarebyte.

  3. Check your inbox and trash folders. Most web service use your email to reset forgotten passwords. Pay close attention to see if there were any attempts to change passwords for any other account. Contact those services immediately, especially financial services.

  4. Monitor your accounts. Remain vigilant, monitor your accounts for the next several week to make sure there are no suspicious activities (ie recovery email, password, phone contact changes).

  5. Change your password often and use a strong password. See tips for creating strong passwords.
